I would argue that Guanajuato has much more nightlife than San Miguel, esp. for younger people. Also, I would say that it is much more international (cosmopolitain) than San Miguel, as the foreign people there are mostly students and from all over the world. Here in San Miguel, the foreign population is mostly from the US & Canada, and the majority of them are not in their 30ies anymore, many of them retirees.
(a joke I heard my first week here in SMA: to see Mummies in Guanajuato you have to go to the Museum of the Mummies, in SMA you can see them dance in the night clubs)
Guanajuato is a bit more conservative, as it is still a Mexican town and the state capital with a lot of burocrats, old families, etc. San Miguel is much more “alternative” due to the big north american influence. Mexicans call it Saint Mike.
I love SMA as it is pretty quiet, and small. perfect after living in the Big Apple for years. Both places are very beautiful.
