Audobon Society in San Miguel de Allende

October 18 Audubon Bird Walk at the Charco

Audubon conducts a birdwalk on the third Sunday of every month–in
October, it’s the 18th, this very Sunday, when Norman Besman and Signe
Hammer will take all you aficionados de aves on a walk at the Charco
del Ingenio, where many interesting birds are always flitting about,
especially in the early morning. Recent sightings have included blue
grosbeaks, black-crowned night-herons, and a northern bobwhite, and
just the other day at the Charco, Mr. Besman sighted an American
Kestrel, “as good-looking a bird as there is,” he said. Recent rains
may even have encouraged water-birds.

So, to catch a glimpse (and more) of some spectacular birds and join
this month’s Audubon walk, meet Norman, Signe and maybe returning Bob
Graham, at the entrance to the Instituto Allende on the Ancha San
Antonio at 7:45 am on Sunday morning. As the sun rises higher and
higher, you’ll be a happier person if you’ve brought a hat and water.
Cars will be available, but if you come by one that can be shared, it
will be very much welcomed, and it’s an easy drive to the starting
point. Or, if you prefer, grab a cab and meet at the entrance of El
Charco.

If you have binoculars to bring, they too would be helpful. Audubon
bird guides and butterfly guides will be avaiable for purchase. The
walk is free for Audubon members and 100 pesos for others. And that’s
all there is to it. You’ll be back by about noon, with new entries for
your life list and new friends in the world of birding.
